Splashing Lovers?

Five simple words:

Darren Hayes was once married.

"Mingling with actors Portia di Rossi and Ellen deGeneres" - oh yeah, coz THAT'S really heterosexual.

Also: eww. How disgusting does he look? That hair is internationally wrong.

Also also: Just because he's got rid of the pearl necklace, doesn't mean he still doesn't like to receive them from "special admirers".

We see you Thorpie, shakin' that ass.

I don't know that I'm so keen on this merciless campaign to out people who'd rather be private about their sexuality, though.

I can understand outing anti-gay hypocrites, of course - if someone's calling for the burning of gays whilst simultaneously sneaking off to the nearest ally for a bit of "male bonding", then they bloody well deserve to be exposed.

But Thorpie? He's just a swimmer. I don't know why we care.

I love how the article says their relationship as lovers is "confirmed" and yet does not contain any quotes from them actually confirming it despite having other quotes from them. Surely they could have dredged up a "close friend" to confirm it like the womens mags do but not even that.

Also the girl has only just broken up with another boyfriend so of course shes jumped straight into bed with Thorpie?? Yeah ...Im sure!

Its almost like after the Darren Hayes outing the Daily Terror had to claim one of ours back for themselves. CW

But that's the thing MrL, he's not being private - he (or his press agents) are very publicly claiming he's straight - which, assuming is not true, means he's peddling a lie and sending out the message to young gay men that they should stay in the closet/find a fake girlfriend if they expect to have success in their chosen careers.

That's what shits me - Thorpie could come out tomorrow and he'll still win Olympic gold medals and be recognised as one of the greatest swimmers of all time.

I wish more athletes would take the Ian Roberts approach. Something like, yeah I'm out, wanna take me on? Wanna try and beat me at my game? I'll still kick your arse anyway.

Have to admit, I'm cynical about all this. Darren Hayes' career has been on the wane for a couple of years now. At this point, any publicity would help him. Publicly announcing that he's gay helps transform Our Darren from bland pop twink to genuine curiosity item/potential idol.

This is the publicity relations equivalent to plastic surgery. If you can't remake your face, then remake your sexuality! Sure, you told everybody yesterday that you're straight; but that can change in a blink of an eye.

What does it matter if Thorpe is ambivalent?
Surely if we think it's OK for people to live harmoniously in society with their queeritude, then it should be OK for IT to be exactly who he wants to be ....even if he doesn't know, at the moment or ever.
We should all be careful of judging a Thorpe by its cover, heaven knows that's what bedogs gay people throughout our narrow little world.

But I'm not arguing that stephen. Ambivalency is one thing; actively constructing a misrepresentation of one's sexuality is quite another.

Admittedly I have no absolute proof IT is an arse-bandit, I'm just 98% sure it's the case. Just as I was with Hayes.

PS - "Ambivalence" even Sorry, I just made up a word.

I love how they've done the big press release, to give the impression that these two are together (while not actually saying it) and then she's quoted as saying that his house is really nice and he's got it all done up 'like he wanted it'. When really, if you were trying to make him sound straighter, you say he'd got some people in to decorate while he was at the footy and really couldn't tell the difference between blue and purple.

It's not that straight men can't be interested in design either, it's just that if you're gonna try to make a bloke look straighter, don't let up that he fits the most obvious of gay male sterotypes. (Naturally, gay men can also be badly dressed, messy and unco-ordinated, I'm talking about sterotypes, not real people)
